A Classic Scout but Electric
The new EV Scout has been big news and many people are eagerly awaiting their deliveries. But one owner is cutting the line by using their classic Scout 800 for an EV Conversion.
A Mail Truck Rebuild
This 1967 Scout 800 started life as a mail truck. As is the reality for many classic cars, a long list of items needed repair and renovation. Many EV conversion shops are not set up well to do a frame-off restoration, but for Current LA they have been doing that type of work for classic cars for years.
Frame-off Restoration
This Scout is getting the full treatment. Being a body on frame car, Current LA is able to work on the shell and chassis separately which is helpful for an EV conversion like this. For the shell, any rust or metal repair is getting fixed and the entire thing is getting repainted. Meanwhile the chassis is getting the electric good stuff installed. This build is using a Cascadia motion motor paired with a Torque Trends gear box which drops the need (and weight/efficiency loss) of the old transmission by connecting directly to the positraction rear end. Three water cooled battery boxes with around 105 kwh of capacity provide the juice to roll.
EV Restomod
Like any good restomod, the EV Scout is being built with updated technology and modern creature comforts. From 4-wheel disk brakes and comfortable suspension to heat and air conditioning and a full sound system, this build requires no sacrifice to daily drive. All of the systems that used to run on vacuum - the windshield wipers for example - are now electric. The interior is also getting completely restored from upholstery seats to gauges and small details.
Daily Driver EV Conversion
Turn the key and tap the power; grab groceries or cruise on the weekend. This is a great example of how a beloved classic car can get new life and daily utility again without the typical fuss or reliability issues common in old cars.
