1967 Ford Mustang GT500 Fastback in SEMA Battle of the Builders by Elkington Electric
Hey everyone! There are a handful of cars out there that are instantly recognizable and capture the imagination, and a classic Ford Mustang Fastback is one of them. I am a huge fan of a good restomod too, updating the classic with modern suspension, brakes, creature comforts, and technologies. This example by Dave Elkington of Elkington Electric is all of the above.
The specs are there: AWD provided by two 570 HP motors give it 1140 HP to the wheels, 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds, 0-100 mph in 6.3 seconds, 300 mile range, and oh yeah did I mention it is fully electric? A good restomod is all about maintaining classic character while updating the mechanics, and this GT500 has Sabelt racing seats, adaptive cruise control, exterior cameras and sensors, Wilwood disk brakes, and a ton of other goodies one would find in a modern car. Imagine driving a car like this with almost no maintenance and $10 for a full “tank of gas” before heading to the track or canyons to cruise.
Dave brought this car to SEMA and was a competitor in the Battle of the Builders. As such, details like Zebra wood and leather interior, and high end sound system round out the build. But by nature of this being an electric drivetrain, there is a lot of adjustability and tuning available too. For example, Dave worked to dial in how power is delivered between the front and rear motors to maximize traction when launching, and things like regen level can be tuned along with the suspension and tires and other systems we are more used to.
